A product head at a mid-size fund house types a question into ChatGPT on her phone: which flexi-cap fund suits a first-time investor? The reply names three schemes, lifts two sentences from a rival’s FAQ page and never mentions her fund, even though her scheme page sits on the first page of Google for the same words. Ranking did not make her page quotable. That gap is what answer engine optimisation closes.

How is answer engine optimisation different from SEO and GEO?
SEO earns a page a position in a list of links. AEO makes a passage on that page usable as the answer itself. GEO, generative engine optimisation, is the wider programme: getting your brand named and cited by AI engines across the web, of which AEO is the content-formatting layer. The three overlap, but they are judged by different things.
| Discipline | What it aims for | Unit of work | What you check |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | A ranking position in search results | The whole page | Rank, clicks, crawlability |
| AEO | A passage an engine can use as the answer | One section under one question | Whether the engine quotes or paraphrases that section |
| GEO | The brand named and cited in AI answers | Pages, entity facts and mentions across the web | Presence across a fixed set of buyer prompts, engine by engine |
The short version of this comparison lives in our GEO and AEO FAQ for financial brands. This page holds the full answer.
What do answer engines pick up from a page?
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a query fan-out technique, running several related searches across subtopics to build one response. It also says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in them beyond its normal search best practices. So AEO is not a trick. It is structure that makes a good page easy to quote.
- A question as the heading. Write the H2 the way a buyer types the question, so a fan-out search lands on it.
- The answer in the first sentence. Plain words, no warm-up. The engine often takes the opening lines of a section.
- Self-contained paragraphs. Each section should make sense if it is the only thing a reader sees. No “as mentioned above”.
- Tables for comparisons. Rows and columns survive extraction better than a long paragraph of trade-offs.
- A visible date and a named publisher. An “Updated” line and a clear brand byline tell the engine the page is current and whose view it is.
Why does AEO change where a BFSI disclaimer goes?
A regulated page used to be read top to bottom, with the fine print at the foot or behind a link. An answer engine reads it in pieces. It can quote the paragraph that states a return or a benefit and skip the footer that qualifies it. The rules that govern Indian financial advertising attach to your content, not to the engine, so the design decision is to move the qualifier into the passage.

The rules make this concrete. SEBI’s advertisement code requires the standard market-risk warning in mutual fund advertisements, and SEBI once lengthened the time the warning must stay on screen and be voiced in audio-visual ads to five seconds, after finding it was being read too fast to follow. IRDAI’s current rules bar insurance advertisements that claim more than a policy can deliver or that insufficiently disclose its exclusions, limitations and conditions. The same rules require an insurer’s advertisements to show its registered name prominently alongside its trade name or logo, and require mandatory disclosures to be clear, conspicuous and legible.
We have not seen Indian financial advertising rules that address AI summaries directly. The safe reading is that a passage an engine can quote should be able to stand as its own communication. In practice that means four placement decisions:
- Qualifier in the same sentence. “Returns are not guaranteed” sits in the sentence that describes returns, not two screens later.
- Warning per section. Every section that names a scheme, a return or a benefit carries its own risk line, even if that repeats on the page.
- Registered name in the passage. The insurer’s or AMC’s registered name appears in the answer text, not only in the logo.
- Language matches. A Hindi answer section carries its disclosure in Hindi, not an English footer.
An engine quotes the paragraph, so the paragraph has to carry the warning.
What does an AEO rewrite of a fund or policy page look like?
Most financial brands already have the raw material. It is locked in long product pages written for a scroll, with the key facts in a PDF. The rewrite follows a fixed sequence:
- List the questions buyers type. Start from real prompts, such as “is this term plan’s claim process simple” or “what is the exit load on this fund”, not from your product brochure.
- Give each question its own section. One H2, one direct answer, then the supporting facts.
- Write the disclaimer into the section. Compliance reviews the passage as a unit, with the qualifier already in place.
- Add a table where buyers compare. Plans, charges or eligibility in rows, sourced from the filed product documents.
- Date it and re-check. Show the update date and re-run the same prompts on each engine to see what gets quoted.

Should a bank, insurer or fund invest in AEO now?
If buyers already ask AI engines about your category, and your pages are long, PDF-heavy or footer-disclaimed, the rewrite is the cheapest part of AI visibility to start with. It uses content you have and a review process you already run. The main cost is compliance time, which falls when the disclaimer is designed into each section instead of argued over afterwards.
AEO alone will not get your brand named where engines are not looking at you at all. That wider work is GEO, which we run for financial brands through our AI visibility programme for BFSI. For the next layer of detail, our 100 AI search optimisation questions cover measurement, schema and engine-by-engine behaviour.
Worked example: an answer engine optimisation rewrite
Take the fund house from the opening and one of the questions from the rewrite sequence: what is the exit load on this fund? This is an illustration of the method, not a client page, and it uses no real scheme figures.
Before. The scheme page has a long overview written for a scroll. The exit load sits in a row of a table inside a collapsed tab called Scheme details, and in the downloadable key information document. The heading above it reads Fund facts. The standard market-risk warning sits once, in the page footer.
After. A new section is headed with the question as a buyer types it. The first sentence states the exit load and the period it applies to, in words, exactly as filed in the scheme documents. The next sentence explains what an exit load is in one line. The standard warning sits in the same section. A visible date shows when the section was last checked against the scheme documents.
Nothing in the rewrite is new information. It moves facts the fund house already publishes into a passage that answers one question and stands on its own. Compliance reviews that section as a unit, and the same pattern is then used for the other questions on the list.
An AEO checklist compliance can sign off
Use this list on every section before it goes for review. It turns the placement decisions above into checks a writer and a reviewer can tick together.
- The heading is a question a buyer would type.
- The first sentence answers it in plain words.
- The section makes sense if it is the only thing a reader sees.
- Any return, benefit or claim has its qualifier in the same sentence or the next one.
- The section carries its own risk warning where the rules require one.
- The registered name of the insurer or AMC appears in the text, not only in the logo.
- Figures match the filed product documents, word for word where it matters.
- A visible date shows when the section was last checked.
Rules change, so confirm the current text of each required warning with your compliance team before the checklist becomes a template.
Common AEO mistakes on BFSI pages
These are the errors we see most often when financial brands start writing for answer engines.
- Writing headings as labels. Fund facts or Key benefits tells an engine nothing about which question the section answers. Use the buyer’s question.
- Opening with the brand story. A warm-up paragraph pushes the answer out of the lines an engine is most likely to take.
- Keeping key facts in PDFs. A charge or an eligibility rule that lives only in a brochure is hard to quote in one piece. Put it in page text.
- Relying on one footer disclaimer. A lifted passage arrives without the footer. Each section that states a claim needs its own qualifier.
- Using as mentioned above. Cross-references break when a passage is quoted alone. Repeat the short fact instead.
- Treating AEO as a one-off. Charges, rules and products change. A section that is not re-dated and re-checked becomes a wrong answer with your name on it.
Who should own AEO inside a financial brand?
Usually the team that owns the website content, because AEO is a way of writing and structuring pages it already publishes. That team decides the question list, writes the sections and keeps the dates current. It works best when three other people have named roles.
- Compliance. Approves the pattern for each type of section once, then reviews each new section as a unit.
- Product. Confirms that every figure matches the filed documents and flags changes before they go live.
- The SEO owner. Makes sure the rewritten pages stay crawlable and indexed, since an engine cannot quote a page it cannot reach.
When those roles are clear, a new section can move from draft to live in one review round. When they are not, the disclaimer becomes an argument at the end instead of a line written at the start. Write the roles into the project plan before the first page is rewritten.
How to brief a writer or agency on AEO
Give the writer the list of buyer questions, the pages each question belongs on and the filed product documents that hold the facts. Include the approved text of each required warning and the name of the compliance reviewer, so the disclaimer is written in, not added later.
Ask for each section as a separate block with its question, answer, supporting facts and qualifier, ready for review as a unit. Ask for a before and after copy of every page changed. Then agree how the result will be checked: the same prompts, on the same engines, re-run on a set date so you can see which sections get quoted.

People also ask
Is AEO the same as GEO?
No. AEO shapes individual passages so an engine can use them as the answer. GEO is the wider effort to get your brand named and cited across AI engines, and AEO is one part of it.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Google says its AI features draw on the same search best practices, so a page that cannot be crawled or ranked is unlikely to be quoted. AEO builds on SEO by making each section of a crawlable page easy to lift.
Can an AI engine drop our disclaimer when it quotes us?
It can, because you do not control the engine’s summary. You control the source. Put the qualifier in the same sentence as the claim, so any faithful quote of that sentence carries the warning with it.
Which pages should a financial brand rewrite first for AEO?
Start with the pages that answer the questions buyers ask most before choosing a product: scheme pages, policy pages, loan eligibility and charges. Pick the ones that already rank or already get traffic, because the engine can find them. A rewrite of those sections uses content you have, so it is the cheapest place to begin.
Does AEO need new schema markup?
Not to appear in Google’s AI features. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed beyond normal search best practices. Accurate structured data that describes your organisation and products still helps engines read your facts, so keep what you have correct rather than adding new formats for their own sake.
How do you know if AEO is working?
Run the same buyer questions on each engine before and after the rewrite, and record which of your sections are quoted or paraphrased. Keep the question list fixed and run it on a set date each month. If an engine starts using your section as the answer, and the qualifier survives, the rewrite is doing its job.
Can AEO pages be written in Hindi or other Indian languages?
Yes, and the same rules apply. The question heading, the first-sentence answer and the qualifier should all be in the language of the section. A Hindi answer with an English footer disclaimer fails the same test as an English answer with no disclaimer. Plan compliance review for each language version, not only the English one.
