The brand tracker comes back on a Tuesday, and the slide everyone waits for shows the same line as last year. People recognise your fund house when a researcher reads the name out. Almost nobody says it unprompted. The new fund offer (NFO) films ran. So did a year of systematic investment plan (SIP) reels. Then the chief financial officer asks the obvious question: if all that spend left the line where it was, why fund more of it? The real answer is that AMC brand awareness stalls for reasons a media plan cannot see, and most of them sit inside the rules your compliance team applies to every frame.
What you need before you start an AMC brand awareness fix
Brand awareness, for an asset management company (AMC), is the share of your target investors and distributors who can name your fund house, with or without a prompt, and link it to something specific. Recognition with no reason attached is the stalled state. It is where many asset managers in India sit, and more reach rarely moves them out of it.
AMC brand awareness stalls for four reasons, and a weak media plan is not one of them. First, the category speaks with one voice: the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) launched Mutual Funds Sahi Hai in March 2017 to sell mutual funds as a category, so investors learn to trust the product without learning to tell fund houses apart. Second, SEBI’s rules remove the usual levers of fame. Third, scheme advertising looks alike, because SEBI prescribes how performance is shown. Fourth, distributors and apps front the relationship, so investors remember the app and forget the AMC.
So the work starts with people and evidence, not a campaign idea. Line these up before the first workshop:
- A single owner. The head of brand or the chief marketing officer (CMO) owns the tracker, the brand idea and the asset system. Shared ownership between marketing and sales is how awareness work drifts.
- A named compliance reviewer. SEBI’s Master Circular for Mutual Funds lists pre-use review of marketing material, including website uploads and digital advertising, among the compliance duties an AMC must assign. Bring that person in at the brief, with the right to say no early.
- The committee that controls education money. Under the same master circular, the AMC’s Unit Holder Protection Committee recommends the policy on how investor education and awareness funds are used and reviews their use. If Phase 3 leans on education, this committee is a stakeholder from day one.
- The distribution head. Distributors carry your name into conversations you never see. Their view of what partners ask for belongs in the diagnosis.
- Inputs. The last two tracker waves, a list of every live asset that carries the brand, a fixed peer set of AMCs to compare against, and this year’s split between launch spend and always-on spend.
If the brand itself may need rework, our brand strategy page shows how we separate positioning problems from visibility problems, which look the same on a tracker.
Phase 1: Awareness stalls in a specific audience, so find which one first
A single awareness number hides where the problem is. An AMC can be well known among distributors in Mumbai and close to invisible among first-time investors in Indore, and the blended figure says “flat” for both. The first phase splits the number until the stall has an address.
Step 1. Split the tracker by question and by audience. Ask four separate questions: unaided recall (name a fund house), aided recognition (have you heard of this one), association (what do you link it to) and consideration (would you invest with it). Then cut every answer by audience: direct-plan investors, distributor-led investors, distributors and advisers, and investors outside the largest cities. SEBI’s trustee reporting already asks AMCs about efforts to reach locations beyond the top 30 cities, so that cut fits a conversation your board is having anyway.
Step 2. Audit what people can actually recall. List every asset that carries the brand: logo, colour, sonic signature, film end card, app icon, fund manager faces, scheme names, the tagline. In the next wave, show unbranded versions and ask who they belong to. Then type investors’ questions into search and AI assistants and note which pages the answers cite. An AMC missing from those answers has a gap no film will close.
Phase 1 usually ends with one of two findings. Either people know the name and attach nothing to it, which is a brand idea problem. Or one audience, often new investors outside the metros, has never met the brand, which is a presence problem. Phases 2 and 3 fix them in that order. Keep the audit sheet: it is next year’s baseline.

Phase 2: The brand idea has to be something the Advertisement Code lets you say
For a mutual fund, the brand idea is limited by law before it is limited by taste. The SEBI (Mutual Funds) Regulations, 2026 came into force on 1 April 2026, and their Fifth Schedule is the Advertisement Code. It bars testimonials and rankings based on any criteria. It says no celebrities shall form part of an advertisement. It bars slogans that are exaggerated, or unrelated to the product’s nature and its risk and return profile. Those are the levers most consumer brands use to get famous fast.
The celebrity rule shows how far this goes. SEBI’s Master Circular for Mutual Funds, as on 20 March 2026, permits celebrity endorsement only at industry level, to raise awareness of mutual funds as a product category. Such endorsements may not promote a particular fund’s scheme or work as a branding exercise for one AMC. The spend is limited to money the industry pools, and SEBI’s prior approval is needed. An AMC that wants a famous face for its own name cannot have one today.
That will change. On 24 September 2026 SEBI’s Board approved a common advertisement code, and SEBI notified it in October 2026 as the SEBI (Intermediaries) (Second Amendment) Regulations, 2026. From April 2027 it lets regulated entities, fund houses included, use celebrities at brand or entity level, with prior approval and no claim about a specific product. The decision we recommend: build a platform that works without a face. When the new code takes effect, a face becomes an addition to a working system, not a rescue for a weak one.
Step 3. Choose a brand idea from how the AMC behaves. Look for a claim about process, not outcome: how you research, how you manage risk, how you explain a fall, how fast you answer an investor. Test every candidate with four questions. Can it be said without a return claim? Without a ranking? Without a person vouching for it? Does it hold for a liquid fund and an index fund as well as the flagship equity scheme? An idea that fails any of the four will be cut in review, usually after the film is shot.
Step 4. Design the fixed blocks into the identity. The Fifth Schedule fixes the standard warning, “Mutual Fund investments are subject to market risks, read all scheme related documents carefully.”, with no word added or removed, in legible type, and in the vernacular in a vernacular advertisement. In audio-visual advertising the warning appears on screen and is voiced, and the code gives fourteen words running for at least five seconds as an example of clear and understandable. Most teams treat that as a cost. Treat it as the most repeated brand moment you own.
Here is the decision in practice, on a hypothetical 15-second pre-roll. Five seconds of warning is a third of the film. If the logo, warning and voice-over each sit in a different style, those seconds teach the viewer nothing. If every film, in every language, closes on the same end card, with logo and warning in one frame, one typeface and a voice-over in the brand’s own voice, the frame SEBI requires becomes the frame people remember. Our lockup rule for asset managers: the warning never leaves the logo’s frame, and its type never drops below the legibility floor compliance has signed.
The same applies to performance advertising. SEBI’s master circular prescribes how returns are shown, including compounded annual growth over standard periods and the value of a standard ₹10,000 investment, so every AMC’s performance ad carries similar tables. Recall has to come from the frame around them. For a buyer’s view of how agencies handle these rules, see what AMCs should ask a mutual fund marketing agency in India.
Phase 3: Awareness grows between launches, through education and distributors
NFO bursts create spikes in attention, and the tracker measures the troughs between them. Many asset managers spend most of the year’s money in a few launch windows and go quiet in between, which is the pattern that flattens AMC brand awareness. Phase 3 is about being present every week, through two channels the rules support.
Step 5. Run an always-on investor education programme. SEBI’s master circular requires AMCs to set apart, each year and within the expense ratio limits, a share of daily net assets for investor education, awareness and financial inclusion: 0.02% for most schemes, and lower or nil rates for index funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and some funds of funds. A portion goes to industry-level initiatives. SEBI’s February 2025 circular confirmed that financial inclusion initiatives count. This money has to be spent on education as your committee’s policy defines it, and audits ask whether it was.
Step 6. Give distributors an approved kit. AMFI’s guidance for mutual fund distributors says they must use the marketing material an AMC provides, may not design their own material for any scheme, and need the AMC’s prior written approval to show its name or logo on their websites, apps or social media. In practice your brand reaches distributor-led investors only through material you supply. A kit with approved templates in the main regional languages, a logo lockup with the warning, and a register of who has permission to use what turns that rule into reach.
Take a hypothetical AMC with ₹50,000 crore of average assets in active schemes. At two basis points, its education set-aside is about ₹10 crore a year. That is not brand money and must not be spent as brand money. Spent well, on plain explanations of SIPs, risk, asset allocation and how to read a factsheet, it puts the fund house’s name beside something useful every week. The non-obvious lesson: the education budget is already funded, while the brand budget is the one under question. Keep promotional spend in its own line, so nobody argues later about which budget paid for which post.
Education content also has a regulatory tailwind, though it starts only in April 2027. Under the common advertisement code SEBI notified in October 2026, educational content with minimal, incidental branding and no promotional call to action is not an advertisement. Until the code takes effect, treat education posts as advertisements for review purposes and keep them free of scheme pushes. Our finance social media questions page answers the common questions teams raise when they move education onto Instagram and YouTube.
The six steps at a glance: owner, time and what to keep
The table below is the plan on one page. The times are typical practice from our own planning for asset managers, not regulator deadlines, and a large AMC with several review layers should expect the upper end. The last column matters most: each step should leave a record that someone outside the team can check.
| Step | Owner | Typical time | Artefact to keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Split the tracker by question and audience | Head of brand with the research agency | 4 to 6 weeks, timed to the next tracker wave | Questionnaire, audience cuts and the baseline scores |
| 2. Audit recall of brand assets and AI answers | Head of brand with the digital team | 2 to 3 weeks | Asset inventory, unbranded recall results, saved AI and search answers with dates |
| 3. Choose a brand idea that passes the four tests | CMO, with compliance in the room | 4 to 6 weeks | Idea, the four-test record, compliance’s written view |
| 4. Design the end card and warning lockup | Brand design lead and compliance reviewer | 3 to 4 weeks | Signed brand book page with the lockup, legibility floor and vernacular versions |
| 5. Launch the always-on education programme | Investor education lead, policy from the Unit Holder Protection Committee | 6 to 8 weeks to start, then ongoing | Committee-approved policy, content calendar, spend log against the set-aside |
| 6. Issue the distributor kit and permissions register | Distribution head with brand | 4 weeks to first release | Kit version list, permissions register, compliance approval reference per template |
Steps 1 and 2 can run together, and so can 5 and 6. Steps 3 and 4 cannot be skipped or swapped. An end card designed before the brand idea gets designed twice.
How long AMC brand awareness takes to move, and who signs off
For most asset managers, expect the set-up to take about two quarters and the first readable movement to take another two or three tracker waves. That is typical practice, not a rule; awareness among a small audience such as distributors moves faster than awareness among first-time investors. Any agency that promises a lift inside one quarter is selling a media burst.
The sign-off chain is shorter than most teams fear, because mutual fund advertising runs on a post-issuance model. SEBI’s June 2026 consultation paper notes that the industry has long worked this way: general mutual fund advertisements are reported after they are issued, not approved in advance by SEBI. The weight therefore falls on your own pre-use review. The CMO signs the brand idea, compliance signs the fixed blocks and each asset, the Unit Holder Protection Committee shapes the education policy, and the board hears about all of it through the trustees’ reports. SEBI’s prior approval enters only in the celebrity case, which today is industry-level only.
What to tell your CFO, in words you can paste: “The AMC brand awareness plan has a set-up cost in the first two quarters and no new media in that period. We will report unaided recall, association and consideration for four audiences each quarter against a fixed peer set. If unaided recall in our target audience has not moved after three waves, we stop and re-test the brand idea before spending more.” This is general guidance, not legal advice; your compliance team decides what the material may say.
How to tell AMC brand awareness is working
AMC brand awareness is working when the right people can name you and say why. Track a small set of measures, each with a formula and a clear limit on what it proves.
- Unaided recall in the target audience. People who name your AMC without a prompt, divided by people asked, for each audience. It shows salience. It does not show preference.
- Association strength. People who link your name to the brand idea, divided by people who recognise you. It shows whether Phase 2 landed. A rise here with flat recall is still progress.
- Consideration conversion. People who would consider investing, divided by people aware of you. If awareness rises and this falls, the brand is known for the wrong thing.
- Branded search share. Searches for your AMC’s name, divided by searches for every name in your peer set, over the same months. It is cheap, monthly and hard to fake. It moves with launches, so compare like periods.
- Distributor kit use. Templates downloaded and permissions granted per quarter. It shows whether the channel you depend on is carrying your brand.
Linking these to new folios is hard, and anyone who claims a clean line from one film to one SIP should show the method. Read the measures together and judge the trend over a year.
What to do when a step fails
Recall stays flat after two waves. Check association before you blame reach. If people recognise the name and attach nothing to it, the idea is too close to the category message. Go back to Step 3 and test whether it can be told apart from what AMFI’s campaign already says.
Compliance rejects the films late. The reviewer probably met the fixed blocks for the first time in a finished edit. See the callout below for the fix.
Distributors keep using the old logo. The permissions register is either missing or nobody owns it. Name an owner in the distribution team, publish the current kit version on one page, and withdraw permissions that point at retired assets.
The idea breaks on a debt fund or an index fund. An idea built around stock-picking flair has nothing to say about a passive fund. Either widen it to cover how the AMC behaves across every scheme, or accept a sub-brand for passive products and design the end card to hold both.
An AMC brand is remembered for what it is allowed to repeat.
People also ask
Can an AMC use a celebrity to build brand awareness?
Not for its own brand today. SEBI’s master circular allows celebrity endorsement only at industry level to promote mutual funds as a category, with SEBI’s prior approval, and bars its use as branding for one AMC. SEBI’s Board approved a common advertisement code on 24 September 2026, and SEBI notified it in October 2026; from April 2027 it allows brand-level celebrities with prior approval.
Does investor education count as advertising for a mutual fund?
Treat it as advertising for review purposes until April 2027. From then, under the common advertisement code SEBI notified in October 2026, educational content with minimal, incidental branding and no promotional call to action is not an advertisement. Keep education content free of scheme pushes and run it through pre-use review.
How long does it take to improve AMC brand awareness?
In our planning, about two quarters to set up the tracker, brand idea and asset system, then two or three tracker waves before movement can be read. That is typical practice, not a rule. Small audiences such as distributors usually move first.
Do mutual fund distributors need permission to use an AMC’s logo?
Yes. AMFI’s guidance says mutual fund distributors must use marketing material the AMC provides and need the AMC’s prior written approval to show its name or logo on their websites, apps or social media. That makes a well-run distributor kit one of the AMC’s main brand channels.
