A depositor in Lucknow asks Microsoft Copilot which small finance bank pays the most on a one-year fixed deposit (FD). The answer quotes a rate your treasury team cut two weeks ago, and it links to the product page you corrected that same afternoon. Bing had not been back to read it. Closing that gap is the job of Bing SEO, and for a financial brand it now decides what AI answers say about your rates and disclosures.

The short answer: Bing SEO is the work of getting Microsoft’s Bing index to crawl and store the current version of your pages. For a financial brand it rests on two free tools: Bing Webmaster Tools, which shows what Bing has stored and cited, and IndexNow, which tells Bing the moment a page changes. Copilot answers draw on that index.

What is Bing SEO for a bank, insurer or fund house?

Bing SEO (search engine optimisation for Bing) means making sure Bing can find your pages, store the latest version of each one and read the facts on them as plain text. For a regulated brand, the facts that matter most are the ones a regulator cares about: an interest rate, an annual percentage rate (APR), a fee, a risk warning, a registered company name.

The reason a marketing head should care in 2026 is a report Microsoft added to its own tools. In February 2026 Bing launched AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools as a public preview. It counts how often a site’s pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot, in AI-generated summaries on Bing and in what Microsoft calls select partner integrations. Microsoft does not name those partners. The point for you is simpler: Bing’s index is one of the sources AI answers are built from, and Microsoft now shows you when your pages are used.

The work has four parts:

  1. Discovery: a clean XML sitemap that lists every page you want found, with honest last-modified dates.
  2. Freshness: IndexNow pings sent the moment a page is added, changed or removed.
  3. Readability: regulated facts written in the page text, close to the claim they qualify, never only inside an image or a PDF.
  4. Measurement: the Webmaster Tools reports, read on a fixed schedule by someone who owns the fixes.

None of this buys placement. In a July 2025 post, Bing’s own webmaster team wrote that no tool can guarantee when or how content will appear in AI-generated results. Bing SEO improves the odds that the version Copilot reads is the current one. That is the whole promise, and for a lender or an insurer it is worth a lot. For the wider picture of how AI engines choose sources, see our AI Search and GEO hub.

What we’ve learned across 320+ projects: the stale figure an AI answer quotes rarely comes from the page you fixed. It comes from a second address nobody re-submitted: last quarter’s rate PDF, a festive campaign page, or an FAQ answer that repeats the number in passing. List every URL that carries a regulated figure before you write a single line of IndexNow code.

How is Bing SEO different from Google SEO and from GEO?

Bing SEO shares most of its basics with Google SEO, but the tools, the freshness signals and the AI reporting differ. Pages still need crawlable HTML, clear titles, sensible internal links and a sitemap. The differences sit in four places.

  • A separate account. Bing Webmaster Tools is its own console. You verify the site there, submit the sitemap there and read Bing’s reports there. Data in Google Search Console tells you nothing about what Bing has stored.
  • IndexNow. The IndexNow FAQ lists endpoints for Bing, Amazon, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex and Yep, and says a submission to one is shared with all participating engines. Google is not on that list as of October 2026, so Google still relies on its own crawling, sitemaps and Search Console.
  • Sitemap signals. Bing’s webmaster blog says Bing uses the lastmod date to decide what to recrawl and ignores the changefreq and priority tags. A sitemap that stamps every URL with today’s date on every build teaches Bing to distrust it.
  • AI citation data. Bing now reports AI citations by page and by grounding query, the phrase its AI used when it went looking for content.

GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is the nearest term and the one most often confused with Bing SEO. GEO is the wider discipline of making a brand’s content easy for AI engines to find and quote, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. Bing SEO is one layer underneath it. If Bing holds an old copy of your home loan page, the best-structured answer on that page cannot reach a Copilot user. GEO work on a page Bing has not re-read stays invisible on Copilot until it does.

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) overlaps with both. It focuses on the format of a page: a direct answer near the top, questions as headings, short self-contained sections. Bing’s February 2026 post recommends much the same: clear headings, tables and FAQ sections, claims backed by examples, data and sources. We set out how the three fit together for lenders and insurers on our AI visibility page for banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) brands.

How does Bing SEO work under Indian and Gulf rules?

No Indian or Gulf regulator has a rule about Bing or IndexNow. What they regulate is the content Bing picks up: the rate and the warning on the page. The page is yours, and so is the version Bing stores. That makes freshness a compliance question as well as a marketing one.

In India, three rule sets shape what your indexed pages must say.

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) requires lenders to give borrowers a Key Facts Statement (KFS), including the APR, before the loan contract is executed. That rule applies to retail and MSME (micro, small and medium enterprise) term loans sanctioned from 1 October 2024; for commercial banks the rule now sits in RBI’s November 2025 Responsible Business Conduct Directions, and other lenders should check the Directions that apply to them. The RBI notification on the Key Facts Statement is a borrower document, not an advert. But if your public loan page quotes an APR, a borrower will compare it with the KFS they receive, so the indexed version has to match the current one.
  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) requires the mutual fund standard warning in advertisements. In audio-visual ads, SEBI’s rules require the warning to be clear and understandable, both on screen and in voice-over. Five seconds is given as an example of what may meet that test, not a fixed minimum. On a web page, our practice is to keep the warning as live HTML text beside the return figure it qualifies. A warning baked into a banner image is invisible to the text Bing stores, so an engine can quote the return without it.
  • The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) replaced its 2021 advertisement regulations with the Protection of Policyholders’ Interests, Operations and Allied Matters of Insurers Regulations, 2024. Every insurer’s advertisement must show its registered name with its trade name or logo prominently, and ads issued through distribution channels need the insurer’s written approval before issue. For Bing SEO that means writing the full registered name in the page text and in your Organization schema, so an engine names the right legal entity. A broker’s comparison page that Bing indexes may well count as a distribution-channel ad, so ask compliance whether it needs that approval trail.

In the Gulf, two rulebooks show the same pattern.

  • The Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) asks anyone making a financial promotion in or from the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) to take reasonable care that it is clear, fair and not misleading, and that it includes the firm’s name, address and regulatory status, under its financial promotion rules. A retail promotion that shows past performance also needs a prominent warning that past performance is not necessarily a reliable indicator of future performance. Put the regulatory status line in the page text of every product page, not only in the footer of the home page.
  • The Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) makes Arabic the language of financial advertising, with an exception for ads aimed at non-Arabic speakers that meet its rules. Its advertising rules also require the ad to state that the institution is subject to SAMA’s supervision and control, and to disclose all related fees and commissions, including VAT (value added tax). They require written compliance approval before publishing, and SAMA can require a non-compliant ad to be withdrawn within one business day of its notice.

That last SAMA rule shows why IndexNow belongs in a compliance plan. Taking a page down is half the job. The IndexNow FAQ says pages that now return a 404 or 410 status should be submitted, so engines can drop them. If the withdrawn page stays in Bing’s index for weeks, an AI answer can keep quoting it. Arabic and English versions also need their own URLs, each listed in the sitemap and each pinged when it changes.

Outside India and the Gulf, the mechanics are the same. The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) have their own promotion rules. What changes from market to market is the disclosure the indexed page must carry, not how Bing finds it. This is general guidance, not legal advice; your compliance team decides what each page must say.

The table below is the decision we put on the page itself: which regulated facts trigger a re-submission, on which URLs, and who signs off first.

Regulated factRule behind it (described generally)URLs that usually carry itWhen to send an IndexNow pingWho signs off before the ping

How do you set up Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow?

Setting up Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow takes a developer and a content owner, and most of it is done once. These are the steps in the order we run them.

  1. Verify the site. If it is already verified in Google Search Console, you can import it into Bing Webmaster Tools, up to 100 sites at a time, and Bing re-checks ownership by syncing with that account. The other routes are an XML file, a meta tag, a DNS (domain name system) record or Domain Connect.
  2. Submit the XML sitemap in Webmaster Tools and reference it in robots.txt. Bing’s July 2025 sitemap guidance allows up to 50,000 URLs per sitemap file and asks that lastmod reflect a real content change.
  3. Create an IndexNow key. Under the IndexNow documentation, a key is 8 to 128 characters of letters, digits and dashes. Host it as a UTF-8 text file named after the key, in the root of the site. A key file placed in a sub-folder only covers URLs inside that folder.
  4. Wire the pings to your content management system (CMS). Send one URL with a GET request, or up to 10,000 URLs in a single POST. Trigger the ping on publish, on update and on unpublish, never on a timer.
  5. Read the response codes. A 200 means the URLs were received and a 202 means the key is still being validated. A 403 means the key was not found, a 422 means the URLs do not belong to the host, and a 429 means too many requests. A 200 is a receipt, not an indexing promise.
  6. Stop wasted pings. The IndexNow FAQ asks you to submit only meaningful changes and to wait a few minutes before re-submitting the same URL. Every submission counts against your crawl quota.
  7. Book a weekly read of the AI Performance report and a monthly check of the URL list in the table above.

Two owners matter more than the tools. A content owner keeps the list of URLs that carry regulated figures, because no plugin knows which pages mention your FD rate. Compliance approves the page before it goes live, and the ping goes out only after publication. Never ping a draft or a staging address: Bing may store a page your reviewer has not seen.

Where do you meet Bing SEO in practice?

Most marketing teams first meet Bing SEO in the AI Performance report, because it is the only place Microsoft shows which of their pages AI answers cite. Microsoft’s February 2026 post lists what it shows: total citations, the daily average of cited pages, the grounding queries behind those citations, citation counts for each URL, and the trend over time.

In June 2026 Bing added four preview views, described in its post on AI visibility insights. Intents sorts grounding queries into types such as informational and commercial. Topics groups related queries into themes. Citation Share shows your share of all citations for a grounding query, which Bing calls an observational metric, not a ranking. Compare sets one period against another.

Read the report with its limits in mind. Bing says the grounding query data is a sample, and that the metrics say nothing about ranking, authority or where a page sits within an answer. The report counts citations, and Bing’s launch post lists no click figures. Treat a rise in cited pages for “home loan interest rate” as evidence that Copilot reads your rate page. It is not evidence that anyone applied.

Take a hypothetical small finance bank that cuts its one-year FD rate from 7.50% to 7.25%. A search of its own site finds the old rate on six URLs: the FD product page, the rate table, an FAQ, the Hindi product page, a festive campaign page and a downloadable rate card PDF. The team updates five pages, retires the PDF so it returns a 410, and sends all six URLs in one IndexNow POST after compliance approves. A week later the AI Performance report shows citations for the rate table and the FAQ, not the product page the team cared about. The lesson is not about the rate. Copilot was reading the FAQ all along, so the FAQ answer needs the same review as the product page.

Which mistakes keep financial brands out of Bing’s AI answers?

The mistakes that keep financial brands out of Bing’s AI answers are almost all operational, and each has a cheap fix.

  • Disclosures inside images. A risk warning or APR set in a banner graphic is not in the text Bing stores. Write it as HTML beside the figure.
  • Rates loaded only by script. If a rate table fills in after the page loads, check that the number appears in the page’s HTML source. If it does not, an engine may store the page without it.
  • Fake freshness. A sitemap that sets every lastmod to the build time, against Bing’s own advice, makes real changes harder to spot.
  • Blocked crawlers. Security teams sometimes block unfamiliar bots at the firewall. Check that Bingbot can reach your product pages, and keep a record of who approved the rule.
  • Orphan PDFs. Old rate cards and brochures stay live for years. Retire them with a 410 and submit them, or keep them current.
  • Pinging everything. Sending the whole site through IndexNow every night wastes your crawl quota and buries the changes that matter.

Try this before the next rate change: search your own site for the current rate as a plain number and list every URL that shows it. That list is your IndexNow batch for the day the rate moves.

People also ask

Does IndexNow work for Google?

Google is not among the engines listed in the IndexNow FAQ as of October 2026. Keep your XML sitemap and Google Search Console in place for Google, and use IndexNow for Bing and the other participating engines.

How fast does Bing pick up a change after an IndexNow ping?

Neither Bing nor the IndexNow project publishes a guaranteed time. The IndexNow FAQ says a submission does not guarantee immediate indexing, only that faster crawling is more likely. Check the page’s citation activity in the AI Performance report over the following days.

Does Bing SEO affect Copilot answers?

Yes, as far as Microsoft reports it. Its AI Performance report counts citations in Microsoft Copilot, in AI summaries on Bing and in select partner integrations it does not name. Bing SEO makes the current version of your page available to those answers. It cannot force a citation.

Should compliance approve a page before it is sent through IndexNow?

Yes. Approve, publish, then ping. SAMA’s advertising rules require written compliance approval before publishing, and IRDAI’s 2024 regulations need the insurer’s written approval for distribution-channel ads. A ping sent from a draft or staging address can put an unapproved version in Bing’s index.
