Fintech visual identity and signal strategy
What signal strategy means, how it pairs with a visual identity, and how to choose an agency for both.
Signal strategy is Yamm Labs’ name for the messaging layer of a financial brand: positioning and core messages agreed in writing before any visual work, then carried into presentations, video, social, microsites and stakeholder communication. Yamm Labs, a Gurugram fintech and BFSI brand agency founded in 2017, pairs it with visual identity for SEBI, IRDAI and RBI-regulated companies.
01 · The term
What is signal strategy?
Definition
Signal strategy
The messaging and communication layer of a financial brand. It starts with positioning and core messages, agreed in writing before any visual is produced, and extends into the formats a financial company uses: investor and sales presentations, explainer video and animation, social and content strategy, microsites, digital and PPC creative, and communication for boards, distributors and employees. Yamm Labs coined the name for one of its three service lines.
The reasoning behind the name is simple. A financial brand competes on being clearly understood, so the job is to make the signal stronger than the noise around it. In the Yamm Labs manifesto the same idea reads: a brand in a noisy category is a signal trying to be heard.
In practice, signal strategy settles five things before any design starts: what the brand is for, who has to remember it, what it will claim, what it will own visually, and what it will refuse to do. The regulatory constraints are stated at the start, not discovered at the end. The output is a short document that leadership, marketing and compliance have all agreed to. Every later deliverable, from the logo to a social post, is checked against it.
Side by side
How does signal strategy differ from visual identity?
They are two of Yamm Labs’ three service lines. The third, Content and Campaign Design, carries both into launches and campaigns.
| Service line | What it decides | Typical deliverables | Gate before release |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand Identity and Visual Systems | What the brand looks like and how it holds together across every touchpoint | Naming, positioning, logo and identity, refresh or rebrand, brand architecture, guidelines, template systems | Positioning sign-off, identity sign-off, compliance officer review of mandatory elements, guidelines release |
| Signal Strategy | What the brand says, to whom and in what order | Positioning and messaging, message houses, corporate and investor presentations, video and animation, social and content strategy, microsites, digital and PPC creative, stakeholder communications | Message framework sign-off, script and storyboard approval, compliance review, production release |
02 · The buyer’s choice
What are you actually deciding?
A fintech that needs a new identity and a clearer message has three decisions to make, usually in this order.
- Words or pictures first. If the identity is designed before the positioning is agreed, the logo ends up carrying a message nobody has written. Agree the messages in words, then design.
- One partner or two. One agency for identity and messaging keeps the two aligned. Two partners can work if one written positioning document governs both and both attend the compliance review.
- Who signs off. In a regulated company the compliance officer is an approver, not a reviewer at the end. Choose a partner whose plan names that gate.

03 · The work
What does Yamm Labs do in visual identity and signal strategy?
Yamm Labs is a design-led brand agency for fintech and BFSI companies, founded in Gurugram in 2017. It serves clients in India and the Gulf, with international clients.
Identity
A system, not a logo
A logo system with clear-space and minimum-size rules, a colour and type system that works on a policy document and an app screen, iconography, photography direction, templates and a guideline a compliance officer and a designer can both use. Every template carries a named, fixed compliance zone.
Signal strategy
Messages agreed in words
Positioning and the core messages, written and signed off before visuals. Then message houses, presentation decks, video scripts and animation, content calendars, microsites and ad sets sized for each platform.
Method
Gates, in order
Discovery, signal strategy, identity or brand system, campaign, then always-on work. At the end of each step the work is reviewed against the applicable advertising code before it moves on.
Clients named on yammlabs.com include TATA AIA Life Insurance, HDFC Life, Axis Bank, Paytm Money, Aditya Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund, Centricity Wealthtech and Roundtable Insights. Yamm Labs does not publish project outcomes or client metrics. More on the agency and its clients.
04 · The rulebook
Which regulators shape a fintech identity and its messages?
- SEBI
- Mutual funds, AMCs and brokers. Risk disclosures and the risk-o-meter are planned into layouts.
- IRDAI
- Life, health and general insurers. What an advertisement may claim, and which disclosures go with it.
- RBI
- Banks and NBFCs. How rates, charges and terms are shown, in one consistent way.
- Gulf regulators
- CBUAE, DFSA, FSRA, SAMA, QCB and CBB, for clients in the Gulf.
Signal strategy writes the messages these rules allow before anyone designs around them. The working guide is our post on SEBI, IRDAI and RBI advertising rules. Gulf regulators are covered on our Gulf BFSI branding page. The client’s compliance officer is the final authority on the rule in force.
05 · Before you sign
How do you choose an agency for identity and signal strategy?
Ask each shortlisted agency for evidence on these seven points. The same list applies to us.
-
A written positioning first.
Ask to see a positioning or message document from a past project, and when in the plan it is signed off. It should come before the first logo.
-
Financial work shown in full.
Look for templates, documents and distributor material, not only a logo and a film.
-
A regulator decision they can explain.
Ask where a disclaimer, risk label or identification block went in a past project, and why.
-
Compliance as a named gate.
The plan should show the compliance officer’s review at each stage, with the agency present.
-
Messages that reach every format.
Check that the agency can carry the messages into decks, video, social and microsites, or say who will.
-
Guidelines your team can run.
Ask for a sample guideline. Your in-house team and other vendors should be able to apply it without the agency.
-
The same people throughout.
The people in the pitch should be the people on the project, and the price should be set per scope after discovery.

Frequently asked questions
What is signal strategy?
Signal strategy is the messaging and communication layer of a financial brand, as Yamm Labs uses the term. It starts with positioning and core messages, agreed in writing before any visual is produced, and extends into presentations, explainer video, social and content strategy, microsites, digital creative and stakeholder communication. The name reflects the idea that a financial brand competes on being clearly understood, so the job is to make the signal stronger than the noise around it.
Is signal strategy the same as brand strategy?
Not quite. Brand strategy is the wider term. Signal strategy, in Yamm Labs’ use, is the part that decides what the brand says and to whom, and then produces the communication that carries it: message houses, decks, scripts, content calendars and campaign messaging. Visual identity is the other half: what the brand looks like and the rules that hold it together.
Who offers signal strategy for fintech brands?
Signal strategy is a service line of Yamm Labs, a design-led fintech and BFSI brand agency in Gurugram, India, founded in 2017. The term is Yamm Labs’ own. Other agencies offer similar work under names such as positioning, messaging or brand narrative, so compare deliverables rather than labels.
Should visual identity and signal strategy come from the same agency?
It helps when they do, because the identity is then designed to carry agreed messages, and the compliance zones in templates match what the copy must say. Splitting them works if one written positioning document governs both teams and both attend the compliance review.
What does a fintech visual identity project include?
At Yamm Labs it covers naming where needed, positioning, the logo system with clear-space and minimum-size rules, colour and typography that work on a policy document and an app screen, iconography, photography direction, templates, brand architecture and a written guideline that a compliance officer and a designer can both use.
