A marketing team at a fund house has a 20-second film ready for a new fund offer. Compliance sends it back with three notes. The cricketer in frame two has to go. The “ranked number one” badge in frame four has to go. The risk warning at the end flashes past in two seconds and has to run longer. None of these notes is about taste. Each one comes from SEBI’s advertisement code, and that is what AMC marketing is: selling a regulated product inside rules that decide who can appear, what can be said and how long the warning stays on screen.

The short answer: AMC marketing is the marketing an asset management company does to win and keep mutual fund investors and the distributors who serve them. It covers the fund house brand, new fund offer campaigns, scheme advertising, fact sheets, digital journeys and distributor material. In India every piece of it that could influence an investment decision counts as an advertisement under SEBI’s mutual fund rules, so the advertisement code shapes the creative, the copy and the media plan from the first draft.

What does AMC marketing actually cover?

An asset management company runs the schemes of a mutual fund. Its marketing has two jobs. The first is building trust in the fund house, because an investor who does not trust the name will not read the scheme. The second is selling specific schemes, often through a new fund offer with a fixed window and a hard deadline.

That work reaches three audiences. Retail investors see TV, video, social and search. Distributors and advisers get product notes, presentations and training. Existing investors get statements, fact sheets and app messages that decide whether they stay. SEBI’s definition of an advertisement is wide enough to catch most of this: any communication by or on behalf of the mutual fund or AMC that may influence an investor’s decision. AssetWhat the rules fixWhat the marketing team still decides
TV and online videoThe standard warning in visual and voice-over, clear and understandable; the code gives the 14-word warning running at least five seconds as an exampleScript length, where the warning sits in the edit and how the story fits the remaining time
Print, outdoor and social postsThe standard warning in legible fonts, with no words added or removedLayout, type size above the minimum and how the warning sits in the grid
Regional language adsThe standard warning in the same language as the adWhich languages to run and how the typeface handles each script
Scheme pages and fact sheetsThe riskometer, placing each scheme on a scale from low to very high riskWhere the riskometer sits relative to returns and fund objective
Every advertisementNo celebrities outside SEBI-approved industry-wide campaigns, no testimonials, no rankings, and content consistent with the scheme documentsCasting, tone, message hierarchy and the brand idea

Which SEBI rules shape how an AMC can advertise?

The SEBI (Mutual Funds) Regulations, 2026 came into force on 1 April 2026 and replaced the 1996 regulations. They require AMC advertisements to follow an advertisement code set out in a schedule to the regulations. The six main rules a marketer works with are these.

  • Accurate and fair. Ads must be accurate, true, fair, clear and not misleading, and must not rest on assumptions or projections.
  • No testimonials, rankings or celebrities. The code bars testimonials, rankings based on any criteria and celebrities in the advertisement. SEBI’s Master Circular allows celebrities only in industry-wide awareness campaigns about mutual funds, with SEBI’s prior approval.
  • No exaggerated slogans. A slogan must fit the nature, risk and return profile of the product.
  • Consistent with the scheme documents. What an ad says must be timely and match the Scheme Information Document, the Statement of Additional Information and the Key Information Memorandum.
  • The standard warning. “Mutual Fund investments are subject to market risks, read all scheme related documents carefully.” It appears in legible fonts, word for word, and in the ad’s own language when the ad is in a regional language.
  • No knocking copy. An ad cannot discredit other advertisements or make unfair comparisons.

What we’ve learned across 320+ projects: the fund film that survives compliance on the first pass is the one scripted backwards from the warning, with the five seconds booked in the edit before a single scene is written.
In mutual fund advertising, the rules decide who can be on screen and how long the warning stays there; the brand decides everything else.

What regulator-driven design decisions does an AMC campaign need?

Many agencies call themselves compliance-aware. The test is whether they can show the decision the rule forces. These are the ones we make on almost every fund brief.

  • Book the warning time first. SEBI first set a five-second display and voice-over time for the standard warning in audio-visual ads in 2008, after finding it was being read too fast to follow, and the current code keeps five seconds as its example of a clear warning. In a 20-second spot that is a quarter of the running time, so the story has to land in fifteen seconds. We lock the end frame and voice-over before the script, not after the rough cut.
  • Replace endorsement with demonstration. With celebrities and testimonials both off the table, a fund film cannot lean on a famous face or a happy investor. It has to show the idea: a goal, a habit, a time horizon. That pushes the creative toward situations and away from faces.
  • Put the riskometer next to the numbers. SEBI requires fund houses to show the riskometer in fact sheets and promotional material. On a scheme page we place it beside past returns and the fund objective, so an investor reads risk and return together instead of finding the risk band below the fold.
  • Plan typefaces for every script. A regional campaign carries the warning in that language, so the brand’s type system needs Hindi and regional script support before the media plan is booked.

What should an AMC decide before it briefs a marketing agency?

Start with the split between brand and scheme work. A fund house brand campaign builds trust over years. An NFO campaign sells one scheme inside a fixed window. They need different briefs, budgets and approval paths, even when the same team runs both.

Next, put the approval path in the brief. Name who in compliance signs off each asset, how long review takes and which scheme documents the copy must match. An agency that knows the review steps can plan the NFO calendar backwards from launch day instead of discovering them in the last week.

Then set the channels and languages, because each regional language adds a warning, a typeface check and a review. Our guide to what AMCs should ask a mutual fund marketing agency covers the questions to put to any shortlist.

Common AMC marketing mistakes

The film in the opening collected three compliance notes in 20 seconds. Each one is a common mistake, and most AMC marketing reviews find some mix of the same few problems. The table sets them out with the fix for each.

MistakeWhich rule it runs intoThe fix
A cricketer or other famous face in the filmThe code bars celebrities in mutual fund advertisementsBuild the film around a situation, a goal or a habit instead of a person
A “ranked number one” badgeThe code bars rankings based on any criteriaExplain what the fund does and who it suits
A happy investor quoteThe code bars testimonialsShow the idea at work without an endorsement
The warning flashing past at the endThe warning must be clear in visual and voice-over; the code’s example runs at least five secondsBook the warning time in the edit before the script is written
An English warning on a Hindi or regional adThe warning appears in the ad’s own languagePlan the type system for every script before the media plan
The riskometer below the foldSEBI requires the riskometer in fact sheets and promotional materialPlace it next to returns and the fund objective
A slogan that promises more than the productSlogans must fit the product’s nature, risk and return profileTest the line against the scheme documents

These are principles drawn from the code as this page describes it. Confirm the current text with your compliance team before approving any campaign, because SEBI updates its circulars and the 2026 regulations are new.

A worked example: re-cutting the 20-second NFO film

Here is how the team from the opening might rebuild its new fund offer film. This is an illustrative sequence built only from the rules on this page, not a client case.

Start from the end frame. The team books the final five seconds for the standard warning, shown on screen and voiced, in the language of the ad. That leaves fifteen seconds for the story. The end frame is designed once and saved as a template for every later cut.

Replace the cricketer. Without a celebrity, the film needs an idea that works on its own. The team picks a situation that fits the fund’s objective and time horizon, and shows it plainly. No famous face and no happy investor quote.

Drop the ranking badge. The badge in frame four goes. In its place, one line explains what the fund is for, taken directly from the scheme documents so it matches the Scheme Information Document and the Key Information Memorandum.

Check the slogan. The closing line is tested against the product’s risk and return profile. If it would read as a promise of returns, it is rewritten.

Carry the fix across formats. The social cut-downs, print ads and the NFO landing page use the same claim, the same warning treatment and a riskometer placed beside the fund objective. The result goes back to compliance as one consistent campaign rather than a set of unrelated assets.

An NFO campaign checklist for AMC marketing teams

A new fund offer has a fixed window and a hard deadline, so review time has to be planned rather than discovered. Use this list to plan the campaign backwards from launch day.

  1. Confirm the scheme documents are final, because every claim must match them.
  2. Write the core claim and slogan, and check them against the product’s risk and return profile.
  3. Book the standard warning into every video and audio edit before scripting.
  4. Decide the languages, and check that the type system supports each script for the warning.
  5. Remove any celebrity, testimonial or ranking from the creative route before production.
  6. Place the riskometer next to the fund objective on the landing page and fact sheet.
  7. Build distributor material from the same claim, so investors hear one story.
  8. Name the compliance reviewer for each asset and the time each review takes.
  9. Schedule media only after compliance has signed the final versions.

Teams that plan AMC marketing this way tend to spend the last week of an NFO on media and distribution, not on re-edits.

People also ask

Is AMC marketing the same as mutual fund distribution?

No. The AMC markets its fund house and schemes and supports the people who sell them. Distributors and advisers sell to investors, and much AMC marketing is material made for them to use.

Can a mutual fund ad use a celebrity or a customer testimonial?

Not for a single scheme or fund house. SEBI’s current mutual fund rules bar testimonials and rankings, and allow celebrities only in industry-wide awareness campaigns with SEBI’s prior approval. SEBI’s Board approved a Common Advertisement Code on 24 September 2026 and SEBI notified it in October 2026. It allows brand-level celebrity use with prior approval, but only from April 2027, so until then fund campaigns still rely on ideas, situations and clear product explanation.

How long must the risk warning run in a mutual fund video ad?

SEBI requires the standard warning to be clear in both visual and voice-over, and its code gives the 14-word warning running at least five seconds as the example of a clear warning, a time SEBI first set in 2008. Plan the edit around that time from the first script.

Do an AMC’s social media posts count as advertisements?

In most cases, yes. SEBI’s definition of an advertisement covers any communication by or on behalf of the mutual fund or AMC that may influence an investor’s decision, and that is wide enough to catch most social posts, reels and stories about schemes. Treat them with the same code as TV and print, including the standard warning, and confirm edge cases with your compliance team.

Can an AMC ad compare its fund with another fund?

The code bars knocking copy: an advertisement cannot discredit other advertisements or make unfair comparisons. It also bars rankings based on any criteria. In practice, AMC marketing works best when it explains what its own scheme does and who it suits, rather than measuring itself against a rival. Check any comparative line with compliance before it goes into production.

What is the difference between fund house brand marketing and scheme marketing?

Fund house brand marketing builds trust in the AMC’s name over years, so investors are willing to read about its schemes. Scheme marketing sells a specific fund, often through a new fund offer with a fixed window. Both follow the same advertisement code, but they need separate briefs, budgets and approval paths, even when one team runs both.

Who should sign off AMC marketing before it goes live?

The AMC’s compliance team, following the fund house’s own approval process. Name the reviewer for each asset in the brief, agree how long each review takes and list the scheme documents the copy must match. An agency that knows this path can plan backwards from launch day instead of finding the review steps in the final week.

Are fact sheets part of AMC marketing?

Yes. Fact sheets are one of the assets existing investors and distributors read most, and they help decide whether an investor stays. SEBI requires the riskometer in fact sheets as well as in promotional material, and anything that could influence an investment decision has to stay consistent with the scheme documents. Design the fact sheet with the same care as a campaign, with the riskometer beside the returns.
