Influencer marketing for financial services

The playbook for banks, insurers, AMCs and fintechs: who to hire, what to pay, what to disclose and how to tell if it worked.

By Yamm LabsUpdated 13 October 202613 min read

Short answer

Influencer marketing for financial services means paying or rewarding creators to talk about a regulated product, so every post is your advertisement. Hire creators whose past content passes your regulator’s tests, brief one approved claim, label every paid post upfront, pre-approve every asset and judge results by cost per approved customer, not views.

01 · The definition

What is influencer marketing for financial services?

The brief says one creator, one credit card, live on Friday. By Wednesday the script has picked up a line about “zero risk”, and compliance has not seen it. That gap between the creator’s calendar and your approval calendar is where financial creator campaigns go wrong.

Influencer marketing for financial services is paying or rewarding a person with an audience to talk about a bank, insurer, fund house, lender or fintech. The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) calls that reward a material connection: money, free products, discounts, gifts, trips, or a family or employment tie.

A finfluencer is a creator who talks about money: saving, investing, credit, insurance or tax. Whitelisting means the brand runs paid ads through the creator’s own handle.

Consumer campaigns buy reach and let the creator talk; financial ones cannot. ASCI holds advertiser and influencer jointly responsible for a paid post, and for a firm regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), such as an asset management company (AMC) or broker, a creator’s other content becomes the firm’s problem. Suitability and disclosure come before reach.

The step teams skip: reading the creator’s last twelve months of posts before the first call. A creator who gave stock tips last month is an association question for an AMC or broker today.

02 · The roster

Which creators should a bank, insurer, AMC or fintech hire?

Four kinds of creator do most of the work. Decide the job first and the creator second.

Type 1 · Finfluencers

Personal-finance creators

Reach among first-time investors, borrowers and card users. Anyone recommending securities or claiming returns needs SEBI registration or permission, shown beside their name. Hire only if their past posts pass your licence check.

Type 2 · Educators

Money and investor educators

Explaining how a category works, such as a systematic investment plan (SIP) or term cover. SEBI lets regulated firms work with people engaged solely in investor education who give no advice and make no return claims.

Type 3 · B2B creators

Practitioners on LinkedIn

Fintechs selling business-to-business (B2B) into banks, insurers or merchants: risk, payments and treasury voices whose followers sit on buying committees. LinkedIn asks for its Brand partnership label on posts shared in exchange for value.

Type 4 · Employees

Your own people

Credibility and hiring. ASCI lists “Employee” as a disclosure label, and SEBI’s guidance names employees as agents of a regulated firm, so their posts carry the firm’s obligations. Train them and approve every post.

03 · The framework

How do you vet a creator before you sign?

Use the Yamm Labs Creator Fit Score: seven checks, each scored 0, 1 or 2 from evidence you keep on file. A check scores 2 when the middle column fits, 0 when the right one does, and 1 in between.

Check and evidence Scores 2 Scores 0
1. Licence match
Keep: registration number and register screenshot
Registration or qualification fits the content and is shown upfront Advice or return claims with no registration or permission
2. Advice history
Keep: dated notes from a post review
Education or general information only Stock tips, price targets or return promises in the last twelve months
3. Audience fit
Keep: analytics export from the creator’s account
Market, age and language match the product Most followers outside your licensed market or under 18
4. Audience quality
Keep: growth chart and comment sample
Steady growth, real product questions in comments Sudden follower jumps, generic comments
5. Disclosure habit
Keep: links to past paid posts
Upfront labels plus the platform’s paid-partnership tool Past paid posts unlabelled
6. Approval tolerance
Keep: signed term sheet
Script, rough-cut and final approval, with edit and takedown rights Refuses script review or edits
7. Brand safety
Keep: search and comment notes
Clean record Recent controversy or abusive threads

Creator Fit Score = the sum of the seven checks, out of 14.

A 0 on licence match or advice history ends the conversation for a SEBI-regulated firm, whatever the total. Otherwise 11 to 14 makes the shortlist, 8 to 10 suits scripted education formats, and below 8 is a pass. Three checks need care:

  • Match the registration number the creator gives you to SEBI’s public register of investment advisers.
  • Get audience location, age and language from the creator’s own analytics; a media kit is a claim, not evidence.
  • For a UAE audience, confirm the creator holds the Advertiser Permit, now issued by the National Media Authority, which took over the UAE Media Council’s work.

04 · The rules

What disclosure rules apply in India, the Gulf and the US?

Every market asks the same thing: tell the audience, upfront, that the post is paid. The differences are placement, timing and who may be hired at all.

India · ASCI

Influencer advertising guidelines

Binds advertisers and influencers, jointly.

A label such as Ad, Sponsored, Collaboration, Partnership, Employee, Free gift or Affiliate, upfront and not buried in hashtags or a bio. A label superimposed on video stays 3 seconds on clips up to 15 seconds, a third of the length up to 2 minutes, and the whole brand section beyond. Finance creators giving technical advice state their qualification upfront.

India · Consumer Affairs

“Endorsements Know-hows!” (2023)

Binds celebrities, influencers and virtual influencers.

Disclose any material connection in simple words such as “advertisement”, “sponsored” or “paid promotion”, and do not endorse what you have not used or checked.

India · SEBI

Association rules, in force since 29 August 2024

Binds SEBI-regulated firms, such as AMCs and brokers, and their agents.

No direct or indirect association, including payment, client referral or shared systems, with anyone giving securities advice or claiming returns without SEBI registration or permission. Branding work with creators who do neither is allowed.

UAE · National Media Authority

Advertiser Permit

Binds individuals posting ads on social media from within the UAE, paid or unpaid.

The creator holds a permit and shows its number. Finance ads need prior approval. Contract only with permit holders in the regulator’s public database, in writing.

Other Gulf markets

Varies by country

Each state has its own media and financial regulators.

Treat each market as a separate approval and check its rules before you contract.

US · Federal Trade Commission (FTC)

Endorsement Guides, revised 2023

Binds advertisers, endorsers and intermediaries.

Disclose any material connection clearly and conspicuously in the post. A platform’s label may not suffice alone. The brand stays responsible for training and monitoring its endorsers.

Two details catch teams out. SEBI’s guidance says hiring through a marketing agency does not move the obligation. And its FAQ, updated on 8 May 2026, says a pure educator should not use market price data from the preceding thirty days to name a security in a way that suggests a future price or advice; the window was three months before.

Platform tools add to your label; they do not replace it. YouTube shows a paid-promotion message for the first 10 seconds when the creator ticks its box, but says creators and brands stay responsible for local law.

Insurers and lenders answer to the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), so treat a creator post as your own advertisement. For the creative rules, see our BFSI marketing compliance FAQ and the one-page compliance cheat sheet.

This is general guidance, not legal advice; your compliance team decides.

05 · The brief

How do you brief a creator for a regulated product?

A finance brief fixes the words that cannot change and leaves the creator free on the rest.

  1. Name one product and one claim.

Take the claim, with its source, from your approved claims record. A creator handed three messages improvises a fourth.

  2. Fix the mandatory lines.

The disclosure label, the creator’s qualification if the content nears advice, and any risk wording your regulator requires, with where and for how long each appears.

  3. List the banned words.

Guaranteed, safe, risk-free, best, and any unapproved comparison or return figure, each with a safe alternative.

  4. Set format and timings.

Length, aspect ratio, label duration under ASCI’s video rules, and whether the post may be boosted or whitelisted.

  5. Agree the approval loop.

Script, rough cut and final cut, each with a named approver and turnaround. Stories and live streams need an approved script first, because they cannot be fixed afterwards.

  6. Plan the comments.

Decide who answers product questions. The creator points viewers to your official page and gives no personal advice in replies or messages.

  7. Write in edit and takedown rights.

ASCI expects the advertiser to call on the influencer to edit or delete a post that breaks its code. Agree how fast.

Brief lines that survive review

Weak line Stronger line Why it holds
“This fund will double your money.” “Here is what a SIP is and how the monthly instalments work.” A mechanism, with no return claim.
“Zero risk, totally safe.” “Here is what this cover includes, and what it excludes.” Describes the product; no safety promise.
“I use this card for everything, link in bio.” “Ad: [Brand] paid me to walk you through this card’s fees and rewards.” Label first, material connection stated.
“Best loan app in India.” “Watch how the app shows the rate and fees before you apply.” A superlative needs proof; a demonstration does not.

06 · The money

How should a financial brand pay creators?

Pay a flat fee for approved deliverables and price usage rights separately. A fee per policy, loan or investment sold needs a compliance decision first, because it can make a creator look like an unlicensed seller.

Model 1

Flat fee

Per approved deliverable, paid on publication. The simplest to approve and audit.

Model 2

Fee plus usage

A separate line for whitelisting or reuse in your ads, with channels and an end date. Each ad needs normal approval.

Model 3

Retainer

A monthly fee for set posts over a term. The creator’s other content must stay clean throughout.

Model 4

Performance

Per lead, application or sale. For a SEBI-regulated firm, paying anyone engaged in unregistered advice is prohibited association. Ask compliance first.

Gifting is no loophole: ASCI counts free products and perks as a material connection, so gifted posts need a label too.

07 · The paperwork

What belongs in the contract and the approval record?

The contract turns the brief into obligations; the approval record proves you met them.

  • Deliverables, posting windows, platforms and markets.
  • Disclosure duties per market: the ASCI label, the platform tool, the permit number for UAE audiences, and a clear disclosure for US audiences.
  • A warranty that the creator gives no securities advice or return claims without SEBI registration or permission, now or during the term. For a SEBI-regulated firm this is the core clause.
  • Pre-approval of every asset, including stories, live streams and reposts, plus edit and takedown within an agreed time.
  • Usage rights: channels, duration and whitelisting.
  • No sharing of customer or lead data outside the agreed flow. SEBI’s guidance treats sharing client information like a client referral.
  • A signed copy on file. The Advertiser Permit guide, published by the UAE Media Council before the National Media Authority took over its work, asks firms hiring an individual advertiser for a written agreement, and agencies to keep records for three years.

The approval record holds the script, final asset, approver, date and a screenshot of the published post.

08 · The numbers

How do you measure an influencer campaign in finance?

Measure cost per approved customer, not views. Only approvals, issued policies, funded loans or first investments show a post worked. Attribution is imperfect, so pair tracked links and codes with a regional comparison.

Metric and formula What it shows What it cannot prove
Cost per qualified visit
Creator cost ÷ visits that reach the product page and stay
Whether the audience looked Whether they were eligible
Cost per approved customer
Creator cost ÷ approvals, issued policies or funded loans from the creator’s link or code
Value comparable with search and affiliates People who applied later by another route
Approval rate
Approvals ÷ applications from the creator
Audience fit with your credit or underwriting rules Creative quality
Disclosure rate
Posts correctly labelled at publication ÷ all posts
Compliance hygiene Whether viewers noticed
Approval cycle time
Days from script submission to final sign-off
Whether your process keeps pace with creators Content quality
Regional lift
Sign-ups in campaign regions against similar regions without creator content
Effect beyond tracked links Precise cause, on its own

A worked example

Take a hypothetical card issuer that pays four creators ₹2 lakh each and compare two of them. Creator A drives 2,000 applications and 100 approvals. Creator B drives 500 applications and 150 approvals.

On cost per application, A wins: ₹2,00,000 ÷ 2,000 = ₹100, against ₹400 for B. On cost per approved customer the order flips: ₹2,000 for A, and ₹2,00,000 ÷ 150 = about ₹1,333 for B.

The lesson: a large, young audience fills the funnel with people your credit policy declines.

09 · The memo

What should you tell your CFO and compliance team?

Paste either note into an email to your chief financial officer (CFO) or compliance head.

To your CFO

We plan an [eight-week] test with [four] creators at a fixed fee of [₹ amount], plus [₹ amount] for whitelisted ads. We will judge it on cost per approved customer against search and affiliates, using tracked links, codes and a regional comparison. If it is above [our search benchmark] at week [four], we stop new posts.

To your compliance team

Each creator passed our seven-check vetting, including a twelve-month review of their posts for securities advice or return claims. Every asset carries an upfront [Ad] label and the platform tag, uses only approved claims, and was approved by [name] on [date]. Contracts include takedown rights; the record is stored at [location].

This is general guidance, not legal advice; your compliance team decides.

10 · The limits

When is influencer marketing the wrong choice?

Skip creators, or delay them, when one of these is true.

  • The message needs personal advice and no registered or qualified creator is available.
  • Your approval loop is slower than the creator’s posting window.
  • The audience sits where you are not licensed, or the creator lacks the local permit.
  • You need every rupee traced to a sale; search and affiliates report more precisely.
  • Your brand is in a trust crisis: a paid defender reads as paid.
  • You are SEBI-regulated and no creator has a clean archive. Use your own experts.

In finance, the creator’s caption is your advertisement, and your name is on the approval.

11 · Answers

Frequently asked questions

Can an AMC or broker in India work with finfluencers?

Yes, within SEBI’s limits. Since 29 August 2024, SEBI-regulated firms and their agents may not associate, directly or indirectly, with anyone who gives securities advice or makes return or performance claims without SEBI registration or permission. Association includes payment, client referral and shared systems. Creators engaged solely in investor education, or registered advisers, can be hired.

Which disclosure labels does ASCI accept on a paid finance post?

ASCI accepts Advertisement, Ad, Sponsored, Collaboration, Partnership, Employee, Free gift and Affiliate, plus Instagram’s Paid Partnership tag and YouTube’s Includes Paid Promotion tag. The label must be upfront and hard to miss, not only in a bio, at the end of a video or among hashtags.

Does a finance influencer need a qualification in India?

For technical advice, yes. ASCI’s guidelines say creators advising on stocks or investments should be registered with SEBI and show the number with their name, and other financial advice needs a qualification such as an IRDAI licence or a chartered accountant or company secretary credential. Creators without one may share general information that is not technical advice.

Do creators in the UAE need a permit to promote a financial product?

Yes, if they post from within the UAE. The Advertiser Permit, now issued by the National Media Authority (formerly the UAE Media Council), covers individuals producing social media ads, paid or unpaid, except those promoting their own business through a personal account. Holders show the permit number, finance ads need prior approval, and firms should contract only with permit holders in the regulator’s public database.

How should a bank or fintech pay influencers?

Pay a flat fee per approved deliverable and price usage rights, such as whitelisted ads, separately. Fees per policy, loan or investment sold need compliance sign-off first, as they can make a creator look like an unlicensed seller, and a SEBI-regulated firm may not pay anyone engaged in unregistered advice or return claims.

How do you measure a finance influencer campaign?

Use cost per approved customer: creator cost divided by approved accounts, issued policies, funded loans or first investments traced to the creator’s link or code. Add approval rate and disclosure rate, and compare campaign regions with similar regions that saw no creator content, because tracked links miss people who apply later.
