A Saturday morning at a State Bank branch in a district town. The queue for the passbook printer reaches the door. A young customer at the enquiry desk wants a new savings account, and the officer points at her phone instead of a form. That small gesture is the whole SBI YONO story. India’s largest bank did not launch another mobile banking feature. It launched a separate brand, with its own name and its own promise, and asked a customer base built on branches to believe that one app could replace the queue.

What is YONO, and why did SBI give an app its own name?
Most Indian banks name their app after the bank. SBI chose a product brand. YONO stands for You Only Need One, and the name is the brief: one login for banking, investing and shopping. At launch the bank said customers would reach lifestyle offers and financial services with a single user id and password, and press coverage counted about 60 e-commerce partners, among them Amazon, Uber, Ola, Myntra, Swiggy, Yatra and Thomas Cook.
The launch promise was concrete. A senior SBI executive said customers could open an SBI account digitally in less than five minutes and transfer funds in four clicks. Those two numbers did more work than any tagline. A customer can check five minutes. A branch officer can demonstrate four clicks at the desk.
A separate name also bought SBI room. A new brand can carry a younger tone than the parent bank without asking the parent to change its voice. It can be launched, advertised and later rebuilt without touching the logo on the branch fascia. The cost is that the bank now runs two brands, and every customer has to learn that YONO is SBI. SBI handled that by keeping the two words together: the app itself is called YONO SBI.
What ran, and when? The SBI YONO timeline, 2017 to 2026
YONO never had one campaign. It had phases, and each phase shows what SBI thought the brand’s job was that year. Every date and name below comes from a source we opened. Where a source does not report an outcome, we say so.
| When | What ran | Who made it | What it changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 November 2017 | YONO launched in Delhi by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, with about 60 e-commerce partners and digital account opening | SBI; no launch agency named in the coverage we read | SBI’s app became a named brand with a lifestyle promise |
| February 2018 | Launch film built on a rap: a user buried in app notifications finds one app that does it all | Famous Innovations, in partnership with Mode Advertising and Marketing | Turned “You Only Need One” into a visible problem and answer |
| 2018 | The older SBI Anywhere Personal app renamed YONO Lite, according to Wikipedia’s summary | SBI | The YONO name began to cover more than one app |
| February 2019 | “20 Under 20”, a youth recognition drive run with more than 2,000 content creators, with 1.7 lakh votes cast | Buzzoka, influencer marketing company | Took the brand to young audiences on social platforms; reach figures not published |
| March 2019 | YONO Cash: cardless withdrawal at more than 16,500 SBI ATMs, using an app PIN and an SMS reference number | SBI | Gave the app a reason to exist at the ATM, not only on the phone |
| 2 July 2023 | “YONO for Every Indian” on the 68th Bank Day: UPI scan and pay for customers of any bank | SBI | Opened the brand beyond SBI account holders; over 6 crore registered users at the time |
| 15 December 2025 | YONO 2.0: mobile and internet banking on one platform, with simpler UPI and quick pay | SBI; no agency named in the coverage we read | A rebuild after poor app store reviews of the first version; target of at least 20 crore users within two years |
| FY26 (to 31 March 2026) | More than 66 per cent of savings accounts opened digitally through YONO | SBI results | The account-opening job moved from counter to app |
The gaps in the table matter. We found no published budget for any YONO campaign, and none of the sources we opened attribute a user or revenue figure to a specific film or drive. Consolidated advertising and publicity spend was Rs 4,246.6 crore in FY26, according to trade press reading of the annual report, but that figure covers the whole group, not YONO alone.

Who made the YONO campaigns, and what did they say?
The launch film is the one with a named agency. Campaign India reported in February 2018 that it was conceptualised by Famous Innovations in partnership with Mode Advertising and Marketing. The film opens on a person drowning in notifications from too many apps. The rap resolves it with one app. That is the name, dramatised: the problem is plurality, the answer is one.
The second named partner is Buzzoka, which ran “20 Under 20” in early 2019. SBI’s digital marketing team described the reach as exceptional; the agency called it one of the biggest influencer-led campaigns in Indian advertising. Neither claim came with an audited reach number, so we treat it as the agency’s own description. For later YONO work, including the 2025 relaunch, the sources we opened do not name a creative agency.
What the creative did not have to do is also telling. It never had to explain that SBI was safe. The parent brand already carried that. The YONO work could spend all its time on convenience and youth, because trust was borrowed from the SBI name sitting next to the app name.
What changed for SBI’s branches after YONO?
The fear with any bank app is that it empties branches. SBI’s own numbers say the opposite happened to the network and something different happened to the work. SBI reported 22,414 branches in March 2018, a few months after YONO launched, and 23,125 in December 2025. The network grew.
What moved was the task. In FY26, SBI said more than 66 per cent of its savings accounts were opened digitally through YONO, and the share of alternate channels in total transactions rose to about 98.7 per cent, from about 98.2 per cent in FY25. In the December 2025 quarter the bank was opening about 60,600 savings accounts a day. At that scale, the form at the counter is no longer the main way in.
In our reading, for branch staff the job shifted from filling forms to pointing at phones, then to the work an app cannot close alone: large loans, disputes, elderly customers, re-KYC problems and cash. YONO Cash showed the pattern early. It did not remove the ATM. It removed the card from the ATM visit, and it made the app the key.
- Branches stayed. The network was larger in December 2025 than in March 2018.
- Account opening moved. Two in three new savings accounts in FY26 came through YONO.
- Transactions moved further. Alternate channels carried about 98.7 per cent of transactions in FY26.
- The branch can sell the app. A promise like five minutes to an account can be shown at the desk.
Why did the YONO brand work for a state bank?
Four things did the work, and none of them was a clever line alone.
- A name that is a promise. You Only Need One tells the customer what to expect and gives the bank a standard to be judged against.
- Numbers a customer can check. Under five minutes to open an account and four clicks to transfer are claims a user tests on day one.
- Distribution nobody else had. The bank could sell the app at every branch, ATM and customer touchpoint it already owned. The agency films started a conversation that the branch finished.
- Utility added over time. Cardless cash in 2019, UPI for any bank’s customers in 2023 and a rebuilt platform in 2025 each gave existing users a new reason to open the app.
The result SBI reports is scale, not attribution. It said YONO had 9.65 crore registered users in the December 2025 quarter and that the new YONO had crossed 3 crore registrations. The sources we opened do not say how much of that came from advertising rather than branch sales.

Where did the YONO promise stop working?
The lifestyle half of the promise faded first. The 2017 launch was built on about 60 shopping, travel and food partners. Coverage of YONO 2.0 in December 2025 leads with UPI, transfers, autopay and a credit score simulator. Shopping is no longer the headline. A bank app turned out to be a place people go to move money, not to browse.
The product lagged the brand. The Week reported that the first version drew poor reviews on the Google Play Store and the App Store, and SBI’s own rebuild merged mobile and internet banking onto one platform. When a name says you only need one, every crash and every second app breaks the promise in public. SBI still lists YONO Lite users next to YONO users in its December 2025 results deck, which makes “only one” harder to say.
The brand also became a strategy question. A former SBI chairman argued for hiving YONO off and suggested it could be valued at 40 billion dollars as a separate entity. In August 2023 the chairman at the time said YONO was a distribution platform and ruled out a spin-off. A strong sub-brand invites that debate. Our guide on how to rebrand a bank without losing trust covers why the parent and child brands need a written rule for who owns the customer.
Which regulator-driven design decisions does a bank app brand have to make?
An app brand like YONO carries more than the bank’s own products. It sells loans, insurance and mutual funds on the same screens. Each product brings a regulator, and each regulator shapes a screen. These are the decisions we would put in the brand system on day one.
- Loan screens: the Key Facts Statement comes before the accept button. RBI requires a Key Facts Statement, including the annual percentage rate and all charges, to be given to the borrower before the loan contract is executed, for retail and MSME term loans sanctioned from 1 October 2024. In a quick personal loan flow, that fixes the screen sequence: offer, Key Facts Statement with APR, acknowledgement, then e-sign. The brand cannot shorten the journey by moving it after the click.
- Language: the statement follows the customer. RBI expects the Key Facts Statement in a language the borrower understands. An app with users across Indian languages needs type styles and layouts that hold in more than one script.
- Insurance tiles: the insurer’s name travels with its logo. IRDAI’s current rules on insurer operations require an insurer’s advertisement to show its registered name along with its trade name or logo prominently. A bank app banner for a group insurer is a lockup rule, not a free design choice.
- Insurance approvals: build in the insurer’s sign-off. Under the same IRDAI rules, advertisements issued through a distribution channel such as a bank need the insurer’s written approval before they run. That approval round belongs in the campaign timeline.
- Fund films: the warning is a timing rule. SEBI requires the mutual fund standard warning in audio-visual advertisements to be displayed and voiced for five seconds. A 20-second fund spot has 15 seconds left for the idea.
None of these rules stopped YONO from having a voice. They decide where the voice ends and the fixed block begins, and a brand that plans the fixed block first never has to cut the idea later.
A bank app’s name is a promise, and the app has to keep it on every screen, every day.
What should a regulated brand take from YONO today?
YONO is useful because SBI is the hardest case: a state bank, a huge branch network and customers who trust the building more than the phone. If an app brand could work there, the lessons carry to a private bank, a small finance bank, an insurer or an AMC.
- Name the promise, not the product. A name that states the benefit gives the team a test for every feature and every film.
- Put a number in the launch. Five minutes and four clicks travelled further than any adjective.
- Use the branch as media. The network is the cheapest and most trusted sales channel a bank app has.
- Keep the parent mark close. The sub-brand borrows trust. Decide the lockup and the clear space before the launch film.
- Retire what no longer fits. The lifestyle marketplace was dropped from the headline. Say so in the brand as well as in the product.
- Design the regulated blocks first. Key Facts Statement, insurer lockups and fund warnings belong in the design system, not in a last-minute compliance pass.
