A two-wheeler loan ad goes up on a bus shelter in Jaipur: a smiling rider, a big “Instant approval” line, a QR code. The borrower scans it and lands in a partner app that shows three offers. Which one is the NBFC’s? What is the real annual cost? Where is the lender’s name? The poster did its job. Everything after the scan is where NBFC marketing is won or lost.

The short answer: NBFC marketing is how a non-bank lender in India wins and keeps borrowers: its brand, loan offers, ads, apps, partner journeys and borrower communication. It differs from ordinary consumer marketing because the Reserve Bank of India regulates what the borrower must see and when, such as the Key Facts Statement with the annual percentage rate before the loan is signed. Good NBFC marketing designs those required elements into the journey from day one instead of adding them at the end.

The short answer, in one card.

What does NBFC marketing include?

An NBFC sells credit, not a product on a shelf. So its marketing covers every place a borrower meets the lender, not just the campaign. For most NBFCs that means five layers.

  • Brand. The name, logo, colour and tone that tell a borrower who is lending to them, and that must stay legible on a partner’s screen as well as your own.
  • Acquisition. Search, social, outdoor, dealer and DSA material, and the landing pages behind them.
  • Loan journey. The app or web screens from offer to sanction, including the Key Facts Statement and the loan agreement.
  • Partner and co-branded journeys. Fintech apps, dealer points and marketplaces where your loan sits beside someone else’s brand.
  • Borrower communication. Welcome kits, repayment reminders, statements, collection messages and grievance channels.

A consumer brand can treat the checkout as a product problem. An NBFC cannot. The loan offer screen is the most regulated and most read piece of marketing it owns.

What we’ve learned across 320+ projects: the loan offer screen should be designed before the hero campaign, because it is the one asset the regulator, the partner and the borrower all read closely, and every other asset has to point to it without contradiction.
In NBFC marketing, the loan offer screen is the ad the regulator reads.

How is NBFC marketing different from bank or fintech marketing?

Banks, NBFCs and fintech apps often chase the same borrower, but they carry different responsibilities in the ad.

The practical difference: an NBFC brand has to hold its own when it appears inside another company’s app. If your name shrinks to a footnote on a partner screen, the borrower cannot tell who lent them money, and neither can a complaint handler.

Which RBI rules shape NBFC marketing?

RBI does not write the ad copy, but its lending rules decide what the loan journey must show. Three matter most to a marketer.

  • The Key Facts Statement. RBI requires lenders, NBFCs included, to give every prospective borrower a Key Facts Statement before the loan contract is executed. For retail and MSME term loans sanctioned from 1 October 2024, it must carry a computation of the annual percentage rate and be in a language the borrower understands. Charges not in the statement cannot be levied later without the borrower’s explicit consent.
  • Lender identity in digital lending. RBI’s digital lending directions ask lenders to publish the details of their lending apps and partners on their own website. Where an app shows offers from several lenders, it has to show each offer with the lender’s name, the amount, tenor and annual percentage rate, in an unbiased way and without deceptive design patterns.
  • Cooling-off and recovery. The same directions give digital borrowers a cooling-off period to exit the loan without penalty, and require borrowers to be told which recovery agent is authorised to contact them. Your welcome and reminder messages are where these facts live.

What does a regulator-driven design decision look like?

Most agencies call themselves compliance-aware. Here is what that means on an actual screen, for an NBFC selling personal loans through its own app and two partner apps.

  • Screen sequence. Offer, then Key Facts Statement, then consent, then agreement. The statement is never a link buried below the sign button; it is its own step, with the annual percentage rate in the largest number on the screen after the loan amount.
  • Lockup rule. On partner apps, the NBFC’s registered name sits in a fixed lockup directly above the offer amount, at a minimum size set in the brand guide. The partner brand frames the page; the lender brand labels the offer.
  • Headline discipline. A rate in a headline is shown as the annual percentage rate the borrower will see in the Key Facts Statement, so the ad and the statement never disagree.
  • Language. The statement template is built in every script the NBFC lends in, so a Hindi or Tamil borrower does not get an English-only document.

Each of these is a decision you can check in a design review. That is the test for any agency: ask to see one.

What should an NBFC decide before it starts marketing?

Four choices set the budget and the timeline more than any creative idea does.

  • Where do most loans come from? If partner apps and dealers drive volume, spend first on the lockup rule and partner kit, not on brand films.
  • Who signs off? Put compliance in the first week of the project. Late review is where launches slip.
  • How many scripts and languages? Each one adds template and review work to the Key Facts Statement and the borrower messages.
  • What must never change? Write down the few elements every asset carries, such as the lender name, rate format and grievance contact, before anyone designs a poster.

If you also sell insurance or mutual funds alongside loans, those products follow IRDAI and SEBI rules instead. See our BFSI marketing compliance FAQ for how the rules differ.

A worked example: one two-wheeler loan from poster to repayment

Go back to the bus shelter in Jaipur and apply the rules above, one touchpoint at a time. Nothing here needs a bigger budget. It needs the decisions to be made in the right order.

  • The poster. The rider, the QR code and the NBFC’s name stay. If the poster quotes a rate, it quotes the annual percentage rate the borrower will later see in the Key Facts Statement, not a friendlier number.
  • The partner app. The scan lands on a screen with three offers. Each one shows the lender’s name, the amount, the tenor and the annual percentage rate, laid out the same way, with none nudged ahead by design. The NBFC’s registered name sits in its fixed lockup directly above its offer amount.
  • The Key Facts Statement. Tapping the offer opens the statement as its own step, before consent and before the agreement. A borrower who reads Hindi gets it in Hindi.
  • The welcome message. After the loan is signed, the first message explains the cooling-off period and names the recovery agent authorised to contact the borrower, if one is ever needed.
  • The reminders. Every repayment reminder carries the lender name, the rate format and the grievance contact written into the brand guide.

Now answer the three questions from the start of this article. Which offer is the NBFC’s? The lockup says so. What is the real annual cost? The annual percentage rate, the same on the poster, the offer and the statement. Where is the lender’s name? On every screen the borrower touches. That is NBFC marketing working as one system rather than as a poster with an app attached.

Common NBFC marketing mistakes

Most problems in NBFC marketing are not bad creative. They are decisions left to the last week, when the only fix is a delay or a compromise. These are the ones we would look for first in any review.

  • Designing the hero campaign before the loan offer screen. The campaign then promises things the offer screen cannot show, and the two have to be reconciled under deadline.
  • Burying the Key Facts Statement. A link below the sign button is easy to build and hard to defend. Give the statement its own step.
  • Letting the rate drift between assets. A headline rate that does not match the annual percentage rate in the statement is the fastest way to lose a borrower’s trust.
  • Shrinking the lender’s name on partner screens. If the partner brand fills the page and the NBFC becomes a footnote, the borrower cannot tell who lent the money.
  • Treating languages as a translation job at the end. Every script the NBFC lends in adds template and review work to the statement and the borrower messages. Plan it at the start.
  • Calling compliance in the last week. Late review is where launches slip. Put the compliance head in the first project meeting.
  • Looking like a bank. An NBFC that borrows a bank’s visual cues invites the wrong comparison. Be clear about what kind of lender you are.

A step-by-step checklist for a new loan journey

Use this order when an NBFC launches a new loan product, adds a partner app or rebuilds its app. Each step settles something the next one depends on.

  1. Map where loans come from: your own app, partner apps, dealers, DSAs or branches. The biggest source gets design attention first.
  2. Write down the elements every asset must carry: lender name, rate format and grievance contact.
  3. Design the loan offer screen and the Key Facts Statement step before any campaign work.
  4. Set the lockup rule for partner apps, with a minimum size in the brand guide, and share it with every partner before launch.
  5. List the scripts and languages you lend in, and build the statement template and borrower messages in each.
  6. Draft the welcome, reminder and collection messages, including the cooling-off period and the authorised recovery agent.
  7. Check that the lending apps and partners the RBI directions ask you to disclose are published on your own website.
  8. Only then brief the campaign, with every headline rate shown as the annual percentage rate.

RBI’s rules for lenders and digital lending are revised from time to time. Confirm the current text with your compliance team before you lock any of these steps.

How to brief an agency on NBFC marketing

A good brief saves weeks of rework. Hand over the facts the agency cannot guess, and ask for evidence that it can design inside the rules rather than around them.

  • Share the loan mix. Which products, which borrower segments, and how volume splits between your own app, partner apps and dealers.
  • Share the current journey. Screenshots of the offer screen, the Key Facts Statement, the consent step and the agreement, on your app and on each partner app.
  • Share the fixed elements. Your registered name, logo rules, rate format, grievance contact and the languages you lend in.
  • Name the reviewer. Tell the agency who in compliance signs off, and book that person into the first review, not the last.
  • Ask for one proof. Ask the agency to show a past screen where a regulatory requirement changed a design decision, and to explain what changed.

If the agency can talk about lockups, statement steps and rate formats as easily as it talks about campaigns, it understands NBFC marketing. If it only shows hero films, keep looking. Our free Brand Audit is one way to see how your current journey reads before you brief anyone.

People also ask

Is NBFC marketing regulated by RBI?

RBI regulates NBFC lending, and its rules decide much of what loan marketing must show, such as the Key Facts Statement before the contract and the lender’s name on digital loan offers. Its digital lending rules also rule out deceptive design patterns on loan offer screens. Treat the loan journey as regulated marketing, not only the ads.

Can an NBFC market loans through fintech apps?

Yes, many do, through lending service providers and partner apps. The NBFC stays responsible for the loan and its disclosures, and the borrower must be able to see which lender is making the offer. Design the partner lockup before the partner launch, not after.

What is the most important asset in NBFC marketing?

The loan offer screen and the Key Facts Statement behind it. They are what the borrower reads before signing and what a complaint or review is judged on. Build every campaign so it leads to that screen without contradicting it.

What is a Key Facts Statement in NBFC marketing?

It is the document RBI requires lenders, NBFCs included, to give a prospective borrower before the loan contract is executed. For retail and MSME term loans sanctioned from 1 October 2024 it must show a computation of the annual percentage rate and be in a language the borrower understands. In marketing terms it is the screen every headline rate has to agree with.

Should an NBFC show its interest rate in ads?

It can, but the number has to match what the borrower sees later. If a headline shows a rate, show it as the annual percentage rate from the Key Facts Statement, so the ad and the statement never disagree. A friendlier number on the poster only moves the disappointment to the offer screen, where it costs more.

How is NBFC marketing different from bank marketing?

Both sell credit, but an NBFC often reaches borrowers through partner apps, dealers and marketplaces, so its brand has to stay legible inside someone else’s screen. Its main brand risks are looking like a bank or hiding behind a partner. Our article on NBFC marketing versus bank marketing covers the comparison in more depth.

What should NBFC borrower messages include after the loan is signed?

The welcome message is where RBI’s digital lending protections reach the borrower. It should explain the cooling-off period during which a digital borrower can exit without penalty and name the recovery agent authorised to make contact. Every later reminder should carry the lender name, rate format and grievance contact. Confirm the current requirements with your compliance team.
