In August 2023 a new holding appeared in the demat accounts of Reliance Industries shareholders: one share of Jio Financial Services for every Reliance share they held. The company behind that line was not new. It had been incorporated in 1999 as Reliance Strategic Investments, and its new name was less than a month old on paper.
The Registrar of Companies certificate for the name change was dated 25 July 2023, and the Reserve Bank of India had issued a no-objection letter for the change before it. That order of events is the whole lesson. When a conglomerate launches a financial brand, the name is not a creative decision that compliance signs off later. The regulator signs off first, and the identity is built around that sequence.

What did Jio Financial Services launch in 2023, and when?
The 2023 launch was a corporate event first and a consumer brand second. Reliance Industries demerged its financial services undertaking into Reliance Strategic Investments Limited, an RBI-registered, systemically important non-deposit-taking NBFC. The National Company Law Tribunal in Mumbai sanctioned the scheme on 28 June 2023. Reliance fixed 20 July 2023 as the record date, and the exchanges held a special pre-open session the same day that set the demerged value at ₹261.85 a share.
The rename came in the middle of that sequence. The information memorandum filed for listing records an RBI no-objection letter dated 19 July 2023 for changing the company’s name, and a fresh certificate of incorporation dated 25 July 2023. A day later, on 26 July 2023, the company announced a 50:50 asset management joint venture with BlackRock, with each partner planning an initial US$150 million. The shares listed on 21 August 2023.
The table below sets out the dated steps from the filings and reporting we opened. We have not found any public source that credits an advertising or design agency with the Jio Financial Services identity, so none is named here.

Why rename an old NBFC instead of starting a new company?
Because the licence was the scarce asset, not the name. The company receiving the business was already registered with the RBI as a non-deposit-taking NBFC. A new company would have needed its own registration. Renaming an entity that already held one meant the brand could move faster than the licensing process.

That choice shaped the brand architecture. Jio Financial Services became the listed holding company. Under it sat the operating entities, each on its own regulatory track: a lending NBFC, an insurance broker, a payments business and a stake in Jio Payments Bank. The information memorandum says the holding company would operate its financial services business through these consumer-facing subsidiaries and a joint venture. Each one carried, or was applying to carry, the Jio name followed by a plain descriptor.
The result is a branded house with descriptive sub-brands: Jio Finance, Jio Payments Bank, Jio Insurance Broking. Joint ventures get a co-brand. The fund house is JioBlackRock, with the Jio name first. The later reinsurance venture is Allianz Jio Reinsurance, with the partner first. Two joint ventures, two different name orders. That tells you the naming rule was negotiated partner by partner, not fixed in a single architecture document.
What did the Jio name change need from regulators?
Every rename in the group needed a regulator’s approval before the new name could be used. The filings show three separate tracks. The RBI issued a no-objection letter for the parent’s name change on 19 July 2023. The IRDAI issued a no-objection certificate on 31 July 2023 for the insurance broking subsidiary to change its name to Jio Insurance Broking, after which the company applied to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs to reserve the new name. The lending subsidiary filed its application with the RBI on 1 August 2023 for approval to become Jio Finance Limited.
This is the regulator-driven design decision most brand teams miss. The regulator sets the order, and the order sets the design brief:
- Approval before artwork goes live. A regulated entity cannot put a new name on a product screen, a policy document or a sanction letter until the regulator and the Registrar have both acted. Identity files can be ready. They cannot ship.
- A transition lockup is required. The information memorandum for the August 2023 listing still carried the line “formerly known as Reliance Strategic Investments Limited” under the new name. Any brand system for a renamed entity needs a lockup that holds that line cleanly for months.
- Different entities move at different speeds. On listing day the holding company had its new name while two subsidiaries were still waiting. The identity system had to work with a mix of old and new legal names across the group.
- The licence to the name is a legal document, not a brand guideline. The filings disclose that Reliance granted the company, and separately its lending and payments bank entities, a non-exclusive licence to use the Jio trademark, which Reliance can terminate in certain circumstances.
For a design team, the practical output is a timeline, not a moodboard. Map every entity, its regulator, its approval status and the surfaces where its legal name must appear. Then design the lockups to fit the slowest approval, not the fastest.
What was the listing-day identity, and how did the market react?
On listing day the identity was mostly the name itself. There was no consumer app, no product campaign and no retail offer yet. What investors saw was a ticker, a trusted consumer name and a filing that described that name as a household brand. The information memorandum argued that recall of the Jio brand would help the company acquire customers at a lower cost and scale products faster.
The market did not price the brand. It priced the mechanics. The stock opened at ₹265 on BSE, a little above the discovered value of ₹261.85, and fell to its 5% lower circuit of ₹251.75 on the first day. It traded in BSE’s T group, which rules out intraday trading. Analysts pointed to passive funds selling ahead of the stock’s scheduled exit from the Sensex and Nifty 50, which had held it only because of the demerger. The exit kept being deferred while the stock stayed locked at its circuit. It was finally removed from BSE indices on 1 September 2023 and from Nifty indices from 7 September 2023.
The lesson for any financial brand listing under a group name is narrow and useful. Recognition helps with customers. It does little for a price that is being set by index rules and forced sellers. Investor communication in that window should explain the mechanics, not lean on the name.
A borrowed name buys recognition on day one; it does not buy the licence, the product or the price.
Where did the masterbrand stop working?
The borrowed name worked for recall. It ran into limits in three places.
First, the gap between name and product. The company listed in August 2023, but the JioFinance app arrived in beta only on 30 May 2024, offering UPI payments, a Jio Payments Bank account and loans against mutual funds, with home loans described as a later step. For about nine months a very well-known name had no retail product under it. A strong masterbrand raises expectations faster than a regulated product can be licensed and built.
Second, the trust runs both ways. The listing document says plainly that the business depends on a trusted brand and that negative publicity, complaints or compliance failures could damage it. Under a shared name, a complaint about a loan or a payment can reach the telecom and retail brands, and a problem in those businesses can reach the lender. This is why a financial brand under a group name needs its own trust signals on screen, not just the group’s logo. Our note on the psychology of trust in financial brand design covers what those signals look like.
Third, the name on the app is not the name on the contract. A customer opens JioFinance. The lender is Jio Finance Limited, the bank account sits with Jio Payments Bank, and the fund house is a separate joint venture.
The RBI’s digital lending rules require the lender to give the borrower a key fact statement before the loan contract is signed, to issue key loan documents such as that statement and the sanction letter in its own name, and to disclose the lending apps and service providers it works with. So the screen sequence is set by rule. The friendly app brand runs up to the loan offer. At the key fact statement and the sanction letter, the regulated legal entity has to take over the screen.

Who created the Jio Financial Services brand identity?
No public source we opened names an agency for the Jio Financial Services identity or its 2023 listing communication. What the company’s own website does show is that it uses JioType, the group’s typeface, in its interface code, and that its structured data lists JioFinance as a sub-organisation of Jio Financial Services Limited. That points to a financial brand built inside the group’s existing design system rather than a separate visual identity. Anyone claiming to have created the identity should be able to show a primary source.
Yamm Labs had no part in the Jio Financial Services launch. We cover it because it is the clearest recent Indian case of a financial brand launched under a conglomerate’s consumer name.
What should a regulated brand under a group name take from Jio Financial Services?
The JFS case gives a working checklist for any bank, insurer, fund house or lender launching under a parent brand in India.
- Start with an entity map. List every legal entity, its regulator (RBI, IRDAI or SEBI), any network rules such as NPCI’s for UPI, its current name, its target name and its approval status. The brand timeline is built from this map.
- Design the lockup for the transition. Plan a version with a “formerly known as” line and a version with a “subsidiary of” or “a joint venture of” line. Test them at app-icon size and on a printed form.
- Keep the group name and the legal name on separate layers. The group name leads on awareness surfaces. The legal entity leads on the key fact statement, the sanction letter, the policy schedule and the account statement.
- Write the co-brand rule once. JioBlackRock and Allianz Jio show how name order drifts when each partner deal is negotiated separately. Decide whose name comes first, what the descriptor is and what happens if the partnership ends.
- Treat the trademark licence as a brand risk. If the parent can withdraw the name, the brand system needs an exit plan: a descriptor and a visual system that can stand without the borrowed word.
- Plan the gap between launch and product. If the listing or announcement comes months before the first licensed product, decide what the brand says in that gap. Silence under a famous name reads as delay.
- Keep the colour and type decision group-aware. Borrowing the parent’s system saves time, but a lender often needs a calmer palette than a telecom brand. Our piece on colour psychology in financial brands sets out why most banks still lean blue.
The same order applies to the banks, insurers and fund houses listed on our clients page, including HDFC Life, Axis Bank and Aditya Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund. In our practice the order does not change: approvals first, the legal-name layer second, the identity third.

When did Jio Financial Services list on the stock exchanges?
Jio Financial Services listed on BSE and NSE on 21 August 2023. Reliance shareholders had received one Jio Financial Services share for every Reliance share held on the record date of 20 July 2023. The stock opened at ₹265 on BSE and hit its lower circuit that day.
What was Jio Financial Services called before 2023?
It was Reliance Strategic Investments Limited, a company incorporated in 1999 and registered with the RBI as an NBFC. The RBI issued a no-objection letter for the name change on 19 July 2023, and the new certificate of incorporation is dated 25 July 2023.
Does Jio Financial Services own the Jio brand?
No. Its listing document says Reliance Industries owns the Jio trademark and has granted the company, and some of its subsidiaries, a non-exclusive licence to use it. Reliance can terminate that licence in certain circumstances, which the company lists as a business risk.
Can a regulated financial company change its name without regulator approval?
Not in the cases on record here. The Jio Financial Services filings show an RBI no-objection letter for the parent, an IRDAI no-objection certificate for the insurance broker and an application to the RBI for the lending arm, each before the new name took effect. Brand teams should build those approvals into the launch timeline from day one.
